Chapter 52 My Husband
Chapter 52 My Husband
Chapter 52 My Husband
It was Christopher. He was here with Queenie, and she seemed to have recovered from her injuries. As
she slipped her arm through Christopher’s, she had the airs of a socialite with her gracious
temperament and a faint smile as Diane watched from afar.
Dressed in a royal blue long dress that revealed her fair shoulders, Queenie looked reserved and
elegant. On the other hand, Christopher was dressed in a formal back suit. With his ramrod figure, a
well-proportioned body comparable to a model’s, and good looks that surpassed even those of popular
film actors, he looked like a deity with Queenie being the goddess accompanying him.
In short, the two of them really were a perfect match.
For a moment, Diane was distracted while looking at the two people as they exchanged greetings with
the guests crowding around them. Just then, Stella walked up to Diane, moved close to her ear, and
said mockingly, “I wouldn’t stay here any longer if I were you, Diane. Aren’t you Mrs. Wayne? In that
case, who is she?”
Diane froze for a moment. Then, she turned her face, darted a frosty look at Stella, and walked away.
Since Christopher and Queenie had been surrounded by people ahead of her, she left from the fringe
of the crowd instead of joining everyone else.
However, with the size of the banquet hall, she couldn’t avoid them forever. Even though Diane had
deliberately avoided the two focuses of attention, they regrettably came to her soon after that while she
was greeting a client whom she knew in person.
At the sight of Diane, Queenie smiled her signature decent smile and said, “Diane.”NôvelDrama.Org owns this.
Truth be told, Diane thought she was far from being a match for Queenie when it came to brazenness.
Queenie could slip her arm through the arm of someone else’s husband while smiling so
unconcernedly at his wife, but she couldn’t do that. Since she couldn’t do so, she decided not to force
herself by wearing a bright smile. Therefore, she simply put on a half-hearted smile and replied, “What
a coincidence.” As she spoke, she glanced at Christopher while he stared at her as well. His gaze was
neither warm nor icy, but he gazed at her so intently that it made her somewhat nervous.
“How have you been doing lately, Diane? It’s been a long time since we last met.” After letting go of
Christopher’s arm at last, Queenie came over and tried to take Diane’s hand.
Taking a step back almost instinctively, Diane avoided Queenie’s small and fair hand. “I’m fine.” Her
voice was flat. Queenie’s hand froze for a moment, and so did her face. Then, she slowly put down her
hand and looked back at Christopher. “The way I see it, Diane seems to be unhappy, Christopher. You
should go back tonight.”
If there was a certain limit to one’s endurance, Diane had reached the end of hers. Upon hearing
Queenie’s words, she took to heart what she had previously treated with indifference. As a result, her
reluctance to make trouble was blown away by a gust of wind. Even she was surprised, for she
became so furious in such a short time that she couldn’t control herself at all.
Before Queenie could turn her face around and before Christopher could join the conversation, Diane
spoke with a note of anger. “Miss Hayworth,” she called before curling her lips into a sneer. “It seems
that you have a thorough grasp of Christopher’s whereabouts. You even know that my husband has not
returned home for a month.”
Husband… This word suddenly pricked a nerve in Christopher like an extremely fine steel wire when
he heard it. He was stunned for a moment as a myriad of emotions flashed quickly across his eyes.
“I…” Queenie looked embarrassed. Like a child who had committed a mistake, she looked at Diane
before turning to face Christopher with her sparkling eyes. “That’s not what I meant. Christopher, I
really didn’t mean that.”
“In that case, what exactly do you mean?” Diane chuckled. Then, she raised her eyes to look at the
man who was staring at her without saying a word throughout. “It’s fine as long as you understand what
she means, for I’m not interested in getting to the bottom of it. May the two of you have a nice evening
today. I have something else to attend to, so pardon me for excusing myself.” With that, she turned
around and left, walking very quickly as if she loathed the person behind her so much that she didn’t
want to be with him even for an instant.
Christopher’s pitch-black eyes narrowed as he looked at the slim and resolute figure from behind. He
didn’t withdraw his gaze for a long time, though.
“Trust me, Christopher—I really didn’t mean to make Diane angry. I’ll explain to her that you’ve been
sleeping in your office lately. She must have misunderstood us. I’ll go right away.” Queenie hurried to
go after Diane.
However, Christopher took her hand and replied softly and gently, “It’s not necessary. Just let her be.”
Then, he looked at the figure who had disappeared into the crowd. He wanted to turn around and leave
at first, but he inadvertently caught a glimpse of another person approaching her. It was an
extraordinarily handsome man dressed in a suit and leather shoes, but he didn’t know the person.
He frowned while feeling vaguely displeased, but he turned around and left quickly without saying a
word.
“Christopher!” called Queenie, who didn’t understand why Christopher had left without her. Then, she
hurriedly went after him.
Meanwhile, Diane had just left Christopher and Queenie when a delighted voice called her from afar.
“Diane!”
Diane looked in the direction of the voice, and she was immediately startled. Her eyes widened as she
said, “William!”
It was William Huntington, and he had studied at the same university as Diane. Diane and William had
been on pretty good terms back in university, but after their graduation, they were busy with their
respective lives and seldom kept in touch. Surprisingly, they ran into each other on this day.
Temporarily repressing the gloom that had just accumulated within her, she walked up to William.
“What a coincidence! What brings you here?”
“Yeah, it’s a coincidence. I saw you over there just now; I thought I had mistaken someone else for you,
but it’s really you. I’m here on behalf of my company to join in on the fun and get to know more people.”
William was a boy with a sunny personality back in university. Even though he had the charm of a
mature man right now, his face was still cheerful and handsome without much shrewdness and
sophistication as he faced a former classmate.
Diane relaxed a lot as it was easy for people to get closer to each other due to the friendship between
classmates. After sizing William up, she couldn’t help but praise, “You’re terrific—it seems that you’ve
been doing well. You’ve become the owner of a business, haven’t you?”
William lowered his face and responded modestly with a smile. He then said, “I just opened a small
company, so I can’t compare with you all—you guys are working at large companies.”
At first, Diane thought that William would mention Christopher. To her surprise, he did not mention
Christopher and avoided talking about him, causing her to sigh with relief.
William looked around casually before asking, “You’re doing fine at NG Enterprise now, aren’t you?”
“Yeah, I’m doing pretty fine,” Diane replied impassively. William fished out a business card. “This is my
business card. Please look after me if there are any dealings in the future.”
“How could I have that capability? I’m nothing but a petty employee,” Diane responded. However, she
politely took the business card and took a glance at it.
Knowing well what to say and what not to, William didn’t badger Diane about this issue. Instead, he
changed the subject and talked about their former classmates.
The two of them had a happy chat over here, whereas Christopher—who was surrounded by the
bosses of a few companies over there—was a bit absent-minded.
After he failed to timely respond to somebody’s words again, Queenie reminded him in a low voice,
“What’s wrong with you, Christopher? Mr. Parker is asking you some questions.”
