Ethan moved with blinding speed, subduing the attacker with a single powerful blow. The man crumpled to the floor, the knife clattering from his hand. In seconds, Ethan had him pinned, his knee pressing into the man's back as he secured his wrists.
"Maxwell!" Ethan barked into his phone. "Get in here now. And bring Dr. Bennett."
With the attacker secured, Ethan rushed to Emma's side, his movements transforming from violent to gentle in an instant. He knelt beside her, his large hand carefully examining the wound.
"Daddy..." Emma whimpered, looking up at him with tear-filled eyes. "Emmy hurts so much. Is Emmy going to die?"
The word "Daddy" from Emma's lips sent a sharp pain through my chest. Ethan had no biological claim to this child, yet he responded to the title with more tenderness than he'd ever shown our own daughter.
"Be good, don't be afraid," Ethan soothed, brushing Emma's hair from her forehead. The doctor will be here soon. Daddy is here, Emmy will be fine."
His voice carried a warmth I'd forgotten he possessed. A gentleness reserved exclusively for Victoria and her daughter.
The front door burst open as Maxwell Chen entered, followed closely by Dr. Harold Bennett. The Stone family's personal physician for twenty years, Dr. Bennett had attended Ethan since he was a pup.
Dr. Bennett's eyes swept the room, taking in the scene with professional detachment. His gaze landed on me briefly, noting my position on the floor where Ethan had roughly discarded me.
"Dr. Bennett, Ethan called sharply. "Come here, Emmy is injured."
His voice was cold, not sparing me a second glance as his focus remained entirely on Victoria and her daughter. The doctor hesitated, his eyes moving between me and Emma, before hurrying to the child's side.
I pushed myself up from the floor, my head still spinning slightly from when Ethan had shoved me. No one offered to help. No one even acknowledged my presence.
Dr. Bennett knelt beside Emma, opening his medical bag with practiced efficiency. "Let me see, young lady." he said gently, examining the wound.
"It burns, Emma sobbed, clinging to Victoria with one hand and Ethan with the other. “It hurts so much!" "The knife appears to have been silver-edged," Dr. Bennett said gravely. "I'll need to counteract the effects immediately."
He removed a vial of Moonberry Fever Reducer from his bag, measuring a small dose into a syringe. "This will help with the pain," he explained to Emma, his manner calm and reassuring.
I watched as he administered the medicine, then carefully cleaned and stitched the wound. The cut was

superficial-barely deep enough to require stitches-yet everyone treated it like a life-threatening injury.
Ethan never left Emma's side, murmuring comforting words and gently stroking her hair. "You're so brave," he praised as Dr. Bennett finished the last stitch. "My

My heart twisted painfully in my chest. I couldn't help but remember Lily's final days-how she had suffered through far worse pain with no father to comfort her, How she had endured countless needles and procedures without Ethan's reassuring presence.noveldrama
Emma's whimpers gradually subsided as the medicine took effect. She leaned heavily against Ethan, her small hand clutching his shirt.
"Will there be a scar?" Victoria asked anxiously, her perfect features marred with concern,
"Minimal," Dr. Bennett assured her. "I've used my finest technique, and with proper aftercare, it should heal beautifully."
Victoria exhaled in relief, her hand covering her heart. "Thank goodness. My poor baby has been through enough."
Throughout it all, I remained invisible. A ghost in my own husband's home, witnessing the care and attention lavished on another woman's child while memories of my own daughter's neglect burned fresh in my mind.
From my position against the wall, I observed the scene with growing numbness. Ethan comforting Emma with tender words and gentle touches. Dr. Bennett attending to her with a level of care that Lily had rarely received during her long illness, Victoria's theatrical displays of maternal concern, rewarded with Ethan's unwavering support.
The parallel to how Lily had been neglected during her illness was painfully clear, reopening wounds in my heart that had never truly healed. As Emma nestled against Ethan's chest, secure in the knowledge that she was protected and loved, I couldn't help but remember Lily's final request-to see her father just once before she died.
A request that had gone unfulfilled, leaving my daughter to depart this world believing her father simply didn't care enough to say goodbye.
