"Ethan? Are you there?" Her voice was deliberately soft and vulnerable. "I'm scared, I can't sleep. Can you

come keep me company?"

Something about her timing felt off. "Did you know I went to confront Olivia?"

A brief pause. "What? No, I just woke up from a nightmare about the snakes."

I decided to be direct. "Why did you put rats in the dungeon where Olivia was held?"
