Chapter 967
"So, it looks like Evadne took off because of that call."
Detective Aaron, with his mind racing, immediately frowned in thought. "But what's strange is, Evadne isn't the type to act so impulsively. Even if she had to leave the Mayor's Office under extraordinary circumstances, she'd at least consult with her sister for a plan.
So, she must've been cornered by whoever was on the other end of the line, offered something she couldn't refuse. That's the only reason she'd make such a desperate move!"
"How odd."
The more Cassius thought about it, the more bewildered and anxious he became. "Avery's gang is all in Helgen, and all the lethal dangers are here too. We were on a mission at the church, Debby was at the Mayor's Office, and Darcy safely returned from the event he attended.
Aside from the safety of her loved ones, what else could have lured Evadne into leaving the Mayor's Office and facing such great danger?"
"It's... Avery!"
Thaddeus turned pale, hardly needing a second thought. "With Harvey gone and Elsie rescued by Elvis, Avery's out of moves.
He had no choice but to target Evadne, to try and take her with him.
After all, Evadne is who he truly wants. If he's going to flee... abandon everything, he'd make sure to take Evadne with him!"
With that, he closed his eyes again, breathing deeply in an attempt to quell the pain and headache overwhelming him.
Their anxious gazes interlocked, all finding the theory frighteningly plausible.
Yet, everyone held their breath, hoping Thaddeus was wrong.
Just then, Darcy's aide burst into the room, sweating bullets:
"Mr. Mayor! There's... there's been an incident!"
Darcy clutched Debby, who was trembling in his arms, and asked sternly, "What happened?!"
The aide stuttered, terrified, "Just now, at the museum opening you attended today, four bombs hidden in the shadows exploded. The museum's been reduced to rubble, and the estimated damage is... in the billions!"
Everyone was stunned. "What? An explosion?!"
And not just one, but four bombs!
Debby, already close to fainting, slumped even further into Darcy's embrace, gripping his shirt tightly, her whole body shaking with fear:
"Darcy... you were there today. It was so close... I could've lost you forever!" "This is horrifying..."
Aaron also clutched his chest, "Darcy, you're one lucky guy. The moment you left, the museum exploded. It's like you have an angel watching over you!"
Darcy had no time to ponder his luck; he urgently asked his aide, "Were there any casualties?!"
"There were... five security officers killed. But thank God you're safe. The bombs exploded after the museum closed, so there were no other casualties. I suspect the terrorists were just aiming to destroy a landmark of Helgen, not targeting you specifically..."noveldrama
"No! They were targeting the Mayor!"
Thaddeus shot up from the sofa, his forehead veins bulging, "I get it now... I know how Avery lured Evadne away!
He planted the bombs at the event the Mayor was attending and called Evadne, telling her that if she didn't show up, he'd detonate the bombs, bury her brother-in- law in a sea of fire, cause mass casualties, and make Debby suffer for life!"
Everyone's heart sank, the reality setting in heavy and hard.
"Evadne... did it to save me?!"
Darcy's heart ached with regret and self-loathing as he pounded his chest, "It's my
fault! I fell for Avery's trap, giving him the perfect opportunity!"
Debby cried uncontrollably, "Evadne... my dear Evadne! It's all my fault!"
"West City, the outskirts."
Thaddeus, his eyes red with rage and sorrow, clenched his fists and etched the
location into his memory, "We start our search there, full-scale.
No eating, no drinking, no sleeping until I find my Evadne!"
...
The Helgen seashore hosted many islands, among them, one farthest from the mainland, known as "Emerald Isle" for its lush, dreamlike beauty, a mysterious and romantic speck in the shimmering blue sea.
This island, bought anonymously by Avery last year, was his alone, renamed "ROSE."
Originally, it was meant as a gift for Evadne.
Now, it had become the "ROSE Cage" that imprisoned his beloved.
Even so, Avery felt content, believing he was giving his gift in a more fervent manner to the one he loved most.
As night fell, stars twinkled softly over the endless sea.
In a luxurious, retro-styled room, under the soft intertwining of silk and shadows, Evadne lay curled up, her black hair spreading across the pillow, sound asleep.
Avery sat by the bed, gazing at her with deep affection and tenderness, his fingers trembling as they weaved through her soft hair, caressing it lovingly.
Finally, his heart pounding wildly, he leaned down to kiss her forehead.
As his cold, trembling lips touched her, tears streamed down his pale, handsome face.
The taste was bitter, yet he found it blissful.
He had lost everything, yet he had her.
In this moment, being beside the woman he loved most, even if he had to set the world aflame, it all seemed worth it.
Avery watched Evadne's sleeping face for a long while. Then, he picked up his phone and dialed that familiar number.
It rang only a few times before someone on the other end picked up.
Avery could faintly hear the sound of soft music, but the person didn't seem inclined to speak.
"Sir..." Eventually, it was Avery who broke the silence, unable to hold back any longer.
What do you think?
