Chapter 974
The news of Evadne's abduction by Avery was a secret kept from her family back home, but Elvis was the exception.
He drove through the night with Elsie, rushing from the hospital to the White House.
On the road, Elsie didn't dare to say a word. Instead, she just gently held him, soothing his trembling back with patient, repetitive gestures.
At that moment, Elvis, despite his stoic facade, was on the verge of collapse. She knew that any word from her, even the palest comfort, would shatter his barely held together composure like a dam bursting at the seams.
"Big brother... Thaddeus..."
Upon seeing his kin, the usually unyielding and tough Elvis couldn't stop his body from shaking and finally broke into tears.
"Elvis, don't cry."
Cassius stepped forward to embrace his brother, his large hand gently patting his back, "Tears won't solve anything. Right now, our priority is to bring Evadne back."
"It's all my damn fault... all my damn fault!"
Elvis harshly slapped himself, "I neglected Evadne... I lost our little sister! I damn well deserve to die!"
"Elvis, it's not your fault."
Thaddeus walked over with heavy steps, his eyes red and swollen from lack of sleep, looking significantly more haggard than just a night ago. His once bright eyes now seemed to be covered in dust, "If anyone's to blame, it's me. I'm Evadne's man. I promised to keep her safe... and I failed miserably. I'm sorry."
He had messed everything up. Once before, when Evadne lost their child, he had said the same thing. But now, those words cut him a thousand times deeper, like a relentless bombardment threatening to tear him apart.
"Evadne...?!"
Debby, seeing Elsie, who bore a striking resemblance to her sister, cried out and rushed to embrace her tightly.
"Debby, this isn't Evadne. This is Elvis's love."
Darcy stared at Elsie, equally taken aback, but still put an arm around Debby, soothing her gently, "You're exhausted. Let's go upstairs and rest a bit, alright?"
Refusing at first, Debby finally conceded when Elsie softly spoke:
"Debby..."
Hearing that call, Debby covered her mouth, her tears nearly leading her to a breakdown.
"I'll accompany you upstairs to rest, okay?" Elsie, mimicking Evadne's tone, negotiated with her.
Unexpectedly, it worked. Debby, in her dazed state, was very responsive to Elsie, and together, they slowly made their way upstairs.noveldrama
In the living room, a heavy silence prevailed.
Elvis watched Elsie's retreating figure, his eyes blurred with tears, his heart aching.
The one thing she despised most in life was being Evadne's stand-in, a shame Avery had branded onto her soul, indelible.
Yet now, she had to assume Evadne's role again, comforting Debby, who was barely holding on.
"Elvis, we've checked before. The helicopter that took Evadne flew towards the southern seas."
As emotions began to stabilize slightly, Aaron finally spoke up, "If I were Avery, I'd definitely take Evadne away from the mainland. And I wouldn't hide out in the woods; too difficult to escape and resources are scarce.
However, although the helicopter headed south, we can't rule out a change of direction mid-flight. But anyway, it gives us a lead. We can start our search from Helgen, starting with Ilana's islands."
