Love That Wasn't Meant to Last

Chapter 23

Seeing I couldn't grab my phone, Zion looked smug, waving it around before me. "Hudson, if you don't behave, you'll end up just like this phone," he sneered, then hurled it to the ground with force.

With a sharp crack, my phone shattered into pieces. I picked it up the screen was destroyed, and it wouldn't turn on. Clearly, his resentment toward me ran deep.

My phone was beyond repair, and there was nothing I could do about it. All I could salvage was the SIM card, which I would need tools to extract later.

I was fuming looking at my broken phone and then Zion. I set the phone down, then threw punches at him and kicked him. He didn't resist, allowing me to vent my anger on him. After a few hits, my frustration subsided, and I stood up.

Staring at his bruised, swollen face didn't bring me any satisfaction. "This is illegal detention," I said coldly.

Zion wiped the blood from his mouth, his tone defiant. "So what if it is?"

Then he doubled over in a fit of coughing, his eyes filling with tears—whether from pain or something else, I couldn't tell.

Looking at me, he said slowly and deliberately, "Hudson, I have no other choice."noveldrama

He glanced over at Selena, who was still asleep, seemingly undisturbed by our commotion. I couldn't tell if she was pretending or really out.

Zion gazed at her with such tenderness, his hand lingering on her pale face as he gently adjusted her blanket.

"I'm not letting you go until Selena fully recovers," he said. "As for your girlfriend, I'll have someone reach out and explain things to her. Don't worry. As long as you don't walk away on your own, I'll make sure this doesn't cost you your relationship."

With that, he held his chest and staggered toward the door. When it opened, I saw several men stationed outside. So it wasn't just the door that was locked-he had even set up guards. Anger flared up in me all over again.

"Zion, if you love Selena so much, why don't you handle all this yourself? Aren't you afraid that she'll fall for me all over again and leave you by keeping me here? Are you crazy?"

He stopped, then burst out laughing. At first, it was a laugh, but then tears mixed in, making him look half-mad. He approached me with a twisted mixture of tears and laughter, and I instinctively took a step back as he locked eyes with me.

"Yes, I am crazy," he said. "I love Selena. I can't stand seeing her like this. I'd do anything if it meant she could be herself again."

I had no response for him-just a sense of utter bewilderment.
