Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire

Chapter 196

Lucky for Selena, Josh called up, moaned about boredom, and begged her to hang out. She jumped at the chance-any excuse to catch a break was a godsend!

But as she got ready and grabbed her purse to head out, Everett was already parked outside, waiting like a hawk. He honked lightly. "Selena, hop in!"

Just the sight of him made Selena's knees go weak, but she knew better than to cross him. That'd only spell trouble later on. Weighing her options, she figured it was best to just go along for the ride.

When they reached the hospital, Everett parked, leaned over to unbuckle her seatbelt, and then took her hand, guiding her to the elevator. Inside Josh's room was Everett's mother, Carolina. It had been ages since Selena last saw her, and she still had that regal elegance about her.

Given their ongoing mother-in-law and daughter-in-law dynamic, Selena figured she'd better keep things smooth, even if they weren't exactly besties. "Hi, Carolina, you're here too," she said, trying to sound casual. Everett gave a curt nod. "Mother."

Carolina's eyes flicked over them, pausing at their clasped hands before her face settled back to its usual calm. With a slight nod, she acknowledged them. Then, as if she couldn't get out of there fast enough, she said, "Since you're here, I'll take my leave." She gave Josh a quick nod and strutted out, heels clicking decisively.

Selena had gotten used to her mother-in-law's frosty demeanor, but today, it hit her-Carolina was just as chilly towards Everett. Their rare encounters seemed almost distant, like they were mere acquaintances.

After three years of marriage, Selena realized that Carolina never asked about her or Everett. Selena had chalked it up to her mother-in-law's dissatisfaction, but now it seemed there was more beneath the surface.

Josh was over the moon to see them getting along better. He looked noticeably perkier as they chatted with him for a couple of hours until he got tired.

The sleek black Rolls-Royce Cullinan

zipped down the street. Selena watched Everett's silent profile, sensing his mood had taken a nosedive since they left the hospital. It was probably because of Carolina. Curious about the tension between him and his mom, she hesitated but then asked, "Everett, is there something going on between you and your mom...?"

He cut in sharply, his voice low, "What do you want for dinner?"

Clearly, he wasn't up for discussing it. Selena swallowed her unease and replied, "I'm craving roast duck." Everett's hand gently caressed her cheek, his tone softening. "Alright, I'll have Derick book us a table."

urgent meeting cropped up. He gave her a quick peck on the cheek and dashed back to work

Left alone with the aromatic roast duck, Selena found her appetite had vanished. She'd gotten used to their cozy evenings together. Selena was determined to wait for him. She had the duck packed up, and caught an Uber to Bennett Corporation. She planned to eat with Everett once he was done and then head home.

When she arrived at Bennett Corporation, she paid the driver and got out, only to spot a familiar figure stepping out of a fancy car. Margot!

Selena paused, wondering what on earth she was doing there so late.
