Chapter 165
Avery’s pov
The weight that had been heavy on my shoulders loosen as soon as I saw his beast. Xade growls, stepping over the fallen hunter as he approaches me in a rush.
Just behind him is Xaden’s wolf who rushes over to Kaylee who has already shifted back into her human form, hissing in pain.
I look over at her. ” Kaylee,” I begin to rip another strip off my shirt to help her with another wound just as Xade reaches beside me and nudges my stomach lightly with his snout, whining a bit.
My eyes soften and I bury my hands in his fur. The familiar warmth calms me down from the chaos that happened just moments ago.
I’m okay, baby is okay, it’s Kaylee who is hurt,”
Kaylee!” Xaden yells as he shifts and falls on his knees beside her. I am okay, it just stings because of the wolfsbane laced in the arrow,” she tries to ease his worries despite her being the one who is injured.
“You’re not okay, you’re hurt,” Xaden grumbles under his breath.
“It’s not the worst pain I’ve felt,” Kaylee grits through her teeth as she tries to mask the look of pain off her face. But none of us bought it. She looks down at the arrow still pierced through her leg. ” It will heal eventually.”
Xaden’s expression looks grim and I move to Kaylee, kneeling beside her. “We need to get the arrow out,” I looked at her and saw how shy she was being naked in front of Xaden. I don’t know if to awe at the moment or give them their privacy.
I heard bones break and felt Xade come behind me protectively as a shield. “It smells like purple wolfsbane, its effects should fade in twenty minutes from now,” Xade utters. “But we can’t risk staying here for long, Henry already stayed back to keep the other hunters occupied, we need to move now,”
Kaylee nods, her shaky fingers reaching for the arrow but Xaden stops her. “Let me,” he tells her and I move a bit to give him more space so he’d be able to better.
Kaylee looks up at him nervously, and he smiles at her gently. “I’ll be as gentle as I can,” he promises her and she shakes her head. “No, please be swift about it. The slower the more painful it will be.”
He searches her gaze and then nods. I rise to my feet, giving them a little privacy and turn to Xade who pulls me flush against him, hugging me as if I was his lifeline. I cling to him, swallowing as I whisper to him that I am okay.
He buries his head between my neck and shoulder and then lifted his head to kiss my ear. The very same ear that bled from the assault of the arrow. I shivered, clinging to him..
He suddenly lets out a soft hiss and I pull back, my brows drawn in worry.
Are you hurt?” I searched his body frantically even though it was impossible to see anything as clear as I want to.
He cups my face. ” It’s nothing, just a scratch,” he promises and I narrow my eyes at his face. ” Xade,” I warned and he smiles, shifting to point at his side. “An arrow grazed me, it should heal soon.”
I look at where he pointed a sure enough there is a huge scratch. I bit my lip, reaching to brush just under it with the pad of my fingers. ” It looks bad.”
“Looks worse than it feels,” he utters, pulling me back in his arms and kissing my head. “I promise it will heal soon. I’m okay.”
I let out a gush of air and nod, kissing his chest where his heart thuds steadily.
Kaylee lets out a hiss and I pull away from Xade to look at her. Xaden has the arrow in his hand and snaps it in half. “Here,” I told him, flying the material I had torn from my shirt so he could wrap it around her wound.
“Kaylee will get on Xaden’s back,” Xade shoots her a firm stare when she looks ready to protest.
You can’t shift in this state-
” And I won’t let you,” Xaden cuts in, looking at Kaylee with determination. She sighs and nods.
” Since we have steered off the tracks we’re going to need to get back on the right path. We can
risk going a longer route. We need to get out of these woods and on our territory as soon as we can,” Xade urges as Xaden helps Kaylee to her feet.
Kaylee winces a bit but smiles at him gratefully.
