My Darling, My Dearest

Chapter 426 Discharged From The Hospital

Chapter 426 Discharged From The Hospital

Rachel took out a shawl from the cabinet and put it on her shoulders. The moment she opened the door, she saw a pair of feet in front of her. When she looked up, Jack was standing with his hands in his pockets. He sneered, "Why aren't you out today?"

Her brows creased as she asked confusedly, "Why would I?"

"Are you not going to see your little friend and his father?" Jack paused for a second and continued, "For a date?"

Rachel was stunned, mouth agape.

'He's crazy, ' she thought inwardly.

'Jack knew that I had dinner with Gary and Jimmy before, but that was a long time ago. And we have never talked about it since then. What is wrong with him now?' she wondered.

She didn't know what was wrong with him today that he brought it up as soon as he came home. Frowning, she said in a flat voice, "Get out of my way."

Jack took two steps sideways to give way to Rachel. She walked out of the room and gently closed the door. However, he suddenly held her hand and said, "I need to ask you something."

Rachel tried to shake his hand off, but his grip tightened.

"Rachel..." He wanted to increase the strength of his hand, but seeing that her face twisted a little, he couldn't bear it. In the end, he gently pulled her to face him. He cupped her face in his hands so she would meet his eyes. "I just want to ask you a question.

Do you have a close relationship with that father and son?"

Rachel got more confused. She couldn't understand why the first thing Jack did as soon as he arrived was to ask about Jimmy and his son. Was he out of his mind? She frowned, took his hands off her face, and snapped, "What does it have to do with you?"

Jack frowned too. "Don't forget that we are not divorced yet. Everything about you has something to do with me."

He was not making any sense at all.

Rachel sneered, "I didn't ask anything about your relationship with Scarlett. I hope you do the same."

Jack's face darkened in an instant upon hearing her words. He wanted to hold her again and explain, but Julie suddenly came over with a tray in her hands. "Miss Shen, you didn't come downstairs, so I brought this here for you. Please eat this before it gets cold."

"Julie, I'll go downstairs with you. Please help me bring that back. I'll eat that in the dining room." Rachel took Julie's interruption an opportunity to go downstairs without looking back.

Jack was left alone, clenching his fists. He wanted to catch up with her, but he changed his mind.

He used Scarlett to provoke Rachel and make her jealous. He thought that it could be a way for her to see his place in her heart clearly. But he didn't expect that he would be choked by her words. He wasn't even able to counter.

A bitter smile curved up in his lips. He felt like he picked up a rock and hit his own head.

Since it had only been half a month after his accident, the wound in his chest was not healed yet. That was the reason why the doctor had always reminded him to stay in bed. And now, because of his anger, he felt a sudden burst of unbearable pain in his chest.

He covered his chest with one hand and pressed the other hand on the wall for support. The pain was so severe that he couldn't even move a step.

After breakfast, Rachel went upstairs again. Seeing Jack standing still in the same position, she wanted to ask if his wound hurt. But when she remembered the argument they had just now, she changed her mind and went straight to her room.

She had nothing to do with him anyway.

In her room, she sat on the couch and forced herself to read a book. But after a while, she heaved a sigh. None of the words she read entered her mind.

Eventually, she chose to compromise.

She opened the door and looked at the direction where Jack had stood. However, he was no longer there.

Scarlett was full of joy on her way to the hospital. She was excited to see Jack's reaction later. Being with him these times, she already knew that checking the news on his phone was part of his daily morning routine.

And one of the websites he browsed was where she posted Rachel's photo with the father and son.

Thus, she was sure that he would see it.

Scarlett was humming a tune subconsciously while walking in the corridor. But when she reached Jack's ward, she saw the hospital cleaner changing the linens.

She took a step back and looked up to check the ward number. After confirming that she was in the correct ward, she asked the cleaner with a frown, "Where is the patient here? Where did he go?"

"He was discharged this morning," the cleaner replied without looking back.

'He was discharged?

Then where could he be?' she asked herself inwardly. But of course, she already knew the answer. Jack was definitely home with Rachel. Unfortunately, she could never show up in that place. All of a sudden, she felt that she was abandoned like trash.

She took out her phone and dialed Tracy's number.

Tracy was in the shopping mall with her friends when she received Scarlett's call. "What's up?"

"Auntie, I just came to the hospital. Jack isn't here anymore. The cleaner told me that he has been discharged this morning." Scarlett made sure that her voice sounded anxious.

Tracy didn't react at once. After a few seconds, she just asked, "Is he alright?"

She wanted to say more, but her friends already walked in front of her. One of them complained, "Why are you so busy with your phone? C'mon, let's hurry up. I need to pick up my grandson at noon."

"Yes, I know,"

Tracy replied to her friend. She then said to Scarlett, "I'll just call you back when I'm done here."

Without waiting for Scarlett to say anything, she hung up.

Scarlett stared at her phone furiously, but she wasn't giving up yet. She called Jack again and again, but as expected, he just canceled all her call attempts.

Rachel had turned a few pages of her book when she suddenly couldn't stop yawning.

Actually, she had just woken up two hours ago. But when she looked at the bed, she felt like something was pulling her to lie on it again. She felt strange because she had never been a sleepyhead before.

She lowered her head and touched her belly. Smiling, she said, "Baby, you are so capable of changing your mom's mood."

After sitting for a while, she felt that her eyelids had gotten heavier. Finally, she put down the book and approached the bed.

But when she lifted the quilt to lie down, her phone rang.

Gary's name flashed on the screen. When they had dinner last night, the little boy asked for her phone number and gave her his phone number as well.

She answered the call with a smile. "Gary, didn't you say that you would wake up late today? Why are you calling me so early?"

"Auntie, can you come to my house? I am alone here." Gary's voice was a little muffled. "Dad has something to deal with. No one is with me right now."

Rachel asked, "Isn't your grandma there?" © 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.

"She went out too. Auntie, I'm hungry now. I want to eat some noodles."

Rachel frowned and thought for a while. She had nothing to do today, and she also felt a little lonesome staying alone at home.

After all, she had read a lot of news recently about children being left alone at home having accidents.

She made up her mind and changed her clothes. After saying goodbye to Julie, she went out. A few seconds later, Jack came back home and asked Julie, "Where is Rachel?"

Julie pointed outside where a taxi had just left and answered, "Miss Shen said she has something to deal with, so she went out."

"Where is she going?"

Julie shook her head, which meant she didn't know. Jack paused for a while, then handed her the bag that he had been holding since he arrived. "Take this to her room." When Rachel arrived, she saw Gary sitting alone on the floor of the living room. He was bending over the tea table, doing his homework. His favorite cartoon was playing on TV.

As soon as Gary saw her, he put down his pencil and ran over to her. He rubbed his stomach and said, "Aunt Rachel, you're finally here. I'm so hungry now."

"But I think you have eaten a lot of snacks already." Rachel pointed at the bags of snacks scattered on the floor beside the tea table.

Gary grinned, rolled his eyes, and said naughtily, "But I still want the food cooked by you, Aunt Rachel."

"Alright."

Rachel washed her hands in the bathroom and went to the kitchen. She made a simple bowl of noodles with the available ingredients in the fridge. But when she brought it to the living room, she saw that Gary had fallen asleep on the sofa, salivating.

She had no choice but to go to the bedroom to get a blanket for him. Since she couldn't leave the little boy sleeping alone, she sat on the other side of the couch, picked up his homework, and looked through it. All of a sudden, she heard a car stopping at the front door. Not long after, a

middle-aged woman appeared at the door with a few bags in her hands. She might have just finished shopping. Shock was written all over the middle-aged woman's face upon seeing Rachel. Her eyes opened wide, her mouth agape. Surprised too, Rachel hurriedly put down the book.

The middle-aged woman turned around and slowly closed the door. She then asked, "Who are you? What are you doing in our house?"

"I'm Gary's friend. He called me and told me that he was alone at home, so I came here to accompany him."

Rachel stood up and picked up her bag. "Since you're back, I think I can leave him now."

The middle-aged woman looked down, and when she noticed Rachel's protruding belly, her eyes widened again. She pointed at it and asked, "Are you...?"

Rachel looked down at her belly and said lightly, "Oh. Yes, I'm almost six months pregnant."

"No wonder," the middle-aged woman murmured and laughed lightly.

Although Rachel didn't hear it clearly, she knew that it was not a good idea for her to stay because of her identity. So, she just smiled at the middle-aged woman and left. But when she came out of the community and was about to take a taxi, Tracy's voice suddenly rang out behind her. "Rachel!"

She didn't expect to see Tracy here. Tracy was already walking towards her when Rachel turned around. Tracy asked at once, "What are you doing here?"

"I just visited a friend," Rachel answered with a faint smile.

At this moment, Gary's grandmother came rushing to them while shouting, "Miss, you left your phone."

It was only then that Rachel realized that she put her phone on the couch earlier. But when she left, she only took her bag.
