Chapter 1659
After Zera left, Wendy refocused on her work. However, her face was even paler than before.
Shortly after, her phone kept lighting up with new message notifications. She unlocked it to check.
What greeted her were photos of Aiken and Zera together on their dates. One after another, the photos painted the unmistakable picture of a blossoming romance-moments of intimacy and connection between them.
Suddenly, a memory surfaced in Wendy's mind. Though she and Aiken had been together for years, they had hardly ever taken pictures together. Aiken had always claimed he disliked being photographed, so she never pushed for it.
But in recent months, their relationship had grown increasingly distant. They both seemed busy, and days would pass without even a single phone call. Aiken rarely reached out to her anymore.
It wasn't because he was too busy to call her. It was because he no longer cared enough to.
Wendy realized now that the principles Aiken had once claimed to hold so dearly were apparently flexible depending on the person.
She drew in a deep breath and closed her eyes, setting her phone aside.
It took her a long time to calm the turmoil within her. When she opened her eyes again, there was no trace of pain or struggle. She redirected her focus to her tasks, immersing herself in work to block out everything else.
A few hours later, Wendy sat at a small, cozy music bistro. The soft tunes playing in the background gave the place an intimate, peaceful atmosphere. It was nothing like the loud and crowded bars she typically avoided. This was one of Wendy's favorite spots to unwind.
However, she couldn't drink, and neither could Skylar, who was driving. So she ordered two cups of chamomile tea, some pastries, and a few small snacks.
On their way here, Skylar had mentioned she had already eaten earlier and couldn't stomach a full dinner. Wendy didn't have much of an appetite either.
The location, by the window, offered
a perfect view of the passersby outside Wendy had called ahead to the owner to reserve this spot. It was quiet, private, and just what she needed.
Wendy arrived first.
After sitting down, she gazed out the window, lost in thought. She tried to clear her mind, but the photos she had seen earlier in the day kept echoing in her mind.
Each image was vividly etched in her memory, even though she had only looked at them once.
They showed a side of Aiken she had never known in all their years together. The contrast stung, mocking her for how naïve and self-indulgent she had been.noveldrama
When Skylar arrived, the first thing
she noticed was Wendy. She paused for a few seconds, standing still as she took in the sight of Wendy gazing absently out the window. The air around her carried an
unmistakable weight, making her low spirits almost palpable.
"I picked up some roast chicken on the way. This place always has a line out the door. A coworker swears it's the best thing ever. Want to try some?"
Wendy snapped out of her thoughts and looked up at Skylar.
To Wendy, Skylar was more than a friend. She was like an older sister who had helped her through difficult times. Over the years, whenever Wendy felt lost or overwhelmed by life's uncertainties, she instinctively sought out Skylar.
Unknowingly, Skylar had become more than a friend-she was family.
The scent of the food wasn't overpowering, but it was just enough to pique Wendy's appetite.
"That must be the same place I've lined up before. I've picked some up after work a few times," Wendy replied.
Skylar chuckled. "Looks like we have the same taste in food."
