Chapter 1669
Zera was left momentarily speechless, blinking in confusion as uncertainty clouded her thoughts. Could it really not be Wendy's doing? She struggled to understand why Aiken had suddenly stopped reaching out to her.
As she tried to make sense of it, Wilbur unexpectedly called her. She answered quickly.
"The hot spring resort? The one I went to before?" she asked. "Oh, you're coming to pick me up? No need. I'll drive myself. I know the way. Please tell Aiken I've missed him these past few days. I can't wait to see him tonight!"
She raised her voice just enough for Wendy to hear through the walls. Whether Wendy actually heard or not didn't matter.
Well, it would have been better if she had done it. Let Wendy compare things. Aiken's attention was fully on her now, with no room for thoughts of Wendy. It was only natural-Aiken liked her.
After all, she was good at charming men, knowing exactly how to pamper them. Men thrived on the desire to protect the ones they cared about, and she played that role flawlessly.
When she saw Wendy, she understood immediately. Wendy was the kind of woman who didn't grasp the subtleties of romance, and she was too focused on her career. Her commanding presence and ambition were intimidating-qualities that offered no sense of conquest.
No man would be drawn to that.
Zera, on the other hand, knew how to present herself as delicate and in need of protection. Even if she became an award-winning actress someday, she would always remain soft and vulnerable in Aiken's eyes.
It was best if everything Wendy had said today was true. Zera didn't want Wendy as a barrier between Aiken and herself.
Inside the house, Wendy overheard Zera's raised voice.
"The hot spring resort?" Wendy's face turned pale as her heart sank. She let out a self-deprecating laugh.
She remembered mentioning to
Aiken that she wanted to visit a hot
spring with him to relax. He had
agreed, but they never went. Nowet
she understood why. He hadnoveldrama
never
wanted to share that romantic experience with her. His passion and romance were entirely reserved for Zera.
Maybe Zera was right. Aiken had never shown her true passion or love. From the beginning, their relationship had been calm, ordinary-a routine born of
vel
convenience, devoid of the thrill and
impulsiveness of real love.
Wendy laughed bitterly and made a decision. "Cancel my flight and rebook another one. If there's a flight tomorrow, I'll leave tomorrow."
After hanging up, she looked around
the house. This place had never truly been hers. Zera's words rang in her mind, sharp and unyielding. Perhaps it was her own moral coercion that had kept Aiken from ending things sooner.
S
She had deceived herself into believing they shared love. But now, the truth of her self-delusion hit her with crushing clarity.
After staring off into space for a while, she stood up and began packing her suitcase.
She carefully sorted through her belongings. The house still held many of Aiken's belongings. Though he hadn't used them much in the past year, she had left everything untouched.
Now, she would leave everything behind, including the house, taking only what she had brought with her. She would erase every trace of her presence from this place.
Tonight, she would wipe away the evidence of her presence there.
