| awoke to the early morning sun streaming through the window, its rays hitting me in the eyes. | let out a hiss of pain as | realized | hadn't closed the curtains.
“Kex,” | called out, turning in the bed. But he was nowhere to be found. | felt a pang of panic as | realized he was gone. The room was silent, the air still. | sat up, my heart pounding in my chest. Where was he?
| rushed to my feet, my bare feet slipping into my slippers as | hurried to the door.
“Kex,” | called out, my voice trembling. | wrapped my gown tightly around me as | stepped into the hall. “Kex!” | screamed, my voice echoing down the empty corridor.
A guard rounded the corner, his eyes wide with alarm. “Have you seen Kex?” | asked, voice breathless.

My hands flew to his cheeks, and he looked up at me in surprise, his eyes wide.
“How dare you refer to Nelly as Lady Nelly?” | spat, my voice trembling with rage. “She’s nothing but a bed warmer, and you will address her by her name!” | continued, my voice rising.
The guard's gaze dropped to the floor, his face impassive. “Yes, ma’am,” he said, his voice barely audible. | could see his knuckles whiten as he gripped his spear, his body rigid with tension.
| straightened my spine, my head held high, as | moved forward. “I am the only lady in this pack,” | said, my voice ringing with authority as | walked away.
| heard the guard mumble, “Yes, My Lady,” but | didn’t look back. Instead, | marched down the corridor, my mind racing. Nelly would not steal my glory. | would make sure of that.
| caught sight of myself in the mirror. | began to have my hair tangled and disheveled, my eyes red-rimmed. | looked like a mess, and it was precisely how | liked it.
| bit myself so hard, | watched as tears began to stream down my cheeks, staining my face with their tracks. | watched them fall, transfixed, as they dripped from my chin. | felt a smile forming on my lips.

| rapped my knuckles on the door to Nelly’s room, but there was no answer. | gently pushed the door open, half expecting to find them inside. But the room was empty, bed unmade, the curtains drawn. | stepped inside, looking around confused.
Had the guard lied to me? Or had they slipped out before | arrived? | frowned, my mind racing with the possibilities. +5 the
Just as | was about to turn around and leave, | heard a moan coming from the bathroom. | froze, straining to hear it again. There it was, unmistakable, the sound of two people in the throes of passion.
l inched closer to the door, my heart pounding in my chest. | could hear soft gasps and moans, and | recognized the voice of Kex, my man.
My blood boiled with rage as | realized that he and Nelly were in the bathroom together, having sex.
| stumbled back, knocking into a nearby jar. It teetered, wobbling on the edge of the table, before falling to the floor with a deafening crash. | stood, frozen, my heart pounding in my ears. | held my breath, waiting to be discovered. But no one came.
Should | run? | wondered, my mind racing. But if | did, Kex might catch me. | looked around frantically, searching for a hiding place. The only option was under the table in the hallway outside Nelly’s room. | ducked down, my heart in my throat, praying that no one would find me.
From my hiding place, | heard footsteps, and then the door opened. | pressed myself against the wall, trying to make myself as small as possible.
Kex's figure filled the doorway, a towel wrapped around his waist. | seethe with jealousy, my heart pounding in my chest. He looked around, searching for the source of the sound.
For a moment, our eyes met, and I held my breath, afraid he would see me. But then, he turned and went back into the bathroom, closing the door behind him. | let out a sigh of relief, my body shaking.
Slowly, carefully, | inched out from under the table. | crept down the hallway, my feet barely making a sound on the cool marble floor. My heart was still pounding in my chest, my breath coming in quick gasps. | knew that if | made even the slightest sound, Kex would hear me.
| kept my eyes on the ground, not daring to look up, my hands trembling. When | reached the end of the hallway, | took a deep breath and began to run, my feet pounding against the floor. | didn’t stop until | reached my room, | closed the door, relaxing my back and my eyes closed.

| heard a soft voice from the door, “My lady?” | opened my eyes, my heart still racing. | saw a maid standing in the doorway, her eyes wide with surprise.
“Get the fuck out of here!” | yelled. my voice hoarse with anger.
The maid jumped back, her hands clasped in front of her. She bowed low, her face pale, and then she turned and hurried from the room. | slammed the door behind her, my whole body trembling with rage.
In a fit of rage, | stormed over to my dressing table and began to throw things. Bottles and jars crashed to the floor, glass shattering and perfume spilling. Tears streamed down my face as | raged, How dare he! How dare he leave me for her! Who the hell does she think she is?
| panted, my chest heaving. | felt like | was going to explode with anger. | had never felt so betrayed, so hurt, so enraged.
| took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart. My hands were shaking as | got to my feet, my hair a tangled mess. | pushed my way over to my wardrobe, my eyes unfocused, and pulled open the door.
| grabbed the first thing | saw, a small vial, and shoved it into my pocket. Then, | stormed out of the room, my mind racing, my steps hurried. | had to teach Nelly a lesson, and | had to make her pay.
| strode into the kitchen, the heels of my shoes clicking on the stone floor. The room was bustling with servants, each one scurrying around with their tasks. | saw one of the maids carrying a tray of food.
| grabbed her by the arm and said, “Who does this food belong to?”
She looked at me, wide-eyed and trembling. “N—n—n-nelly, my lady,” she stammered.
“Go get my cup from the dining room,” | demanded, and she scurried off, dropping the tray of food in her haste.
| poured the contents of the small vial into the food. A wicked grin spread across my face as | wrapped my hands around the tray. The maid returned with my cup, and | placed the spiked food on the tray, hiding my smirk.
“Thank you,” | said with a smile. “You may leave.” The maid scurried off.
| walked out of the kitchen as the show was about to begin.
