A woman with messy curly hair and smudged makeup stepped up next to him. “Yeah, stop bothering us! You’re being ridiculous,” she added, glaring at them.

Allison turned to face them.

The man and woman stood just a few feet away, their faces full of hostility. It was clear that they were Amya’s parents — the same couple the old neighbor had warned her about.

“I’m Amya’s boss,” Allison said, her tone calm. “Do you know where she is?”

The couple exchanged a suspicious look.

“How would we know?” they replied.

Mindy Hayes, the woman, pouted and ran her fingers through her hair. Her guilty look gave her away. She clearly didn’t want anyone knowing what had happened to her daughter.

“If you’re her boss, why aren’t you looking for her in Ontdale? That useless girl hasn’t been here,” she said, brushing them off.

Troy Hayes, the man, waved his hand in annoyance.

“I may be her father, but that girl’s been nothing but trouble since she was little. If she’s in some mess, that’s on her, not us.” At first, he thought they might be from Shadow Nine. But when Allison said she was Amya’s boss, Troy quickly assumed his daughter had gotten into some kind of trouble.

Mindy reached forward, pushing Allison aside. “Move out of the way! If she owes you money, that’s your problem, not ours. I always knew she was good for nothing! Such a worthless girl doesn’t belong to our family!”

Allison had already seen Mindy’s move coming and stepped back just in time. Mindy missed, tripping forward and hitting the ground with a loud “Ouch!”

She quickly scrambled to her feet, covered in mud, and glared, ready to yell. “Did you do that on purpose—”

Before she could finish, she stopped, taken aback by the sharp, cold look in Allison’s eyes.

“Amya is not worthless,” Allison said firmly, locking eyes with her. “You two, as her parents, are the real trash.”

In that moment, Allison finally understood why Amya had been so shy when they first met. The girl had lived in a cramped, filthy apartment, hiding from the world.

Amya was clearly brilliant with computers, but she had been suffocated by parents like these.

“You!” Mindy screamed, her face burning with anger.

Troy, just as furious, snapped, “Are you here just to stir up trouble?” Meanwhile, a group of people came running toward them, with the village leader at the front.

He wore casual slacks and looked to be in his thirties, but his face was set in an expression of polite caution.

“Excuse me, is that black Maybach parked outside yours?” he asked, sizing up Allison and Kellan.
