Chapter 64
KAEL.
"How much time do we have?" I asked Erika as I put on my shoes.
"I don't know." She replied while helping Adessa to zip up our bags.
"Adessa, the pouch." I reminded her.
"I have it."
"Where is Sasha?" I asked.
"In her room. I will deal with her later. You need to leave now. Don't use the trail you took going here, as I'm sure that's the same one they will come from. Do you still remember that secret exit I showed you before?"
I nodded. It had been decades, but I knew where it was. I just hoped the landmarks hadn't changed yet.
"I'm sorry. I wished I had seen this coming. I knew she would never hurt Kael, so I thought..." Her tears fell again, and I felt the misery inside her.
I should have told her about all the other things Sasha did to the women in my life. Then, maybe we could have avoided this. But more than Erika, this was all my fault. I should have seen this coming. She would never hurt me, but she surely didn't have any reservations about the women in my life.
But I had no time to discuss this with Erika or even to console her. We've got to get moving.
"Did you know if she told them I was with Adessa?" I kept asking questions as we walked in a hurry down the corridor, my hand gripping Adessa's hand and the other holding the duffel bag.
"No. She specifically told me she just told them it was Adessa here, not you. I don't know how she would explain why you were also here, but she went on to say she would never hurt you, and it was Adessa who needed to answer for her crimes."
There were many things I wanted to say, but it was no use at the moment. So, I kept my mouth shut as we exited her home. But in all of this, only one thing was sure: this world was so big, but it seemed I couldn't find anyone to trust.
It didn't take long before I began driving away, taking a path not mainly used for traffic, but one that would lead me somewhere, an exit leading to a regular road.
But we weren't even driving for five minutes when the gas meter began blinking.
"What the fuck?" I growled as I slammed my palm on the steering wheel. Adessa was also looking at the dashboard screen, so she knew we had run out of gas. "I fucking swear the gas was over halfway when we arrived here!" "Did you think she..."
"Of course, I know she did!" I cut her off before stepping on the brake. "We need to do this on our own. Grab your bag."
"What do you mean?" She asked, but she had already jumped out of the car and opened the back seat to pull her backpack and my duffel bag.
"We'll run with my wolf," I told her.
"Kael..." Her eyes widened. "I don't have a wolf."
"I know. I'll carry you. Leave the duffel bag. We don't need it. It's just my clothes."
"Wouldn't they know then that you're with me if they see your bag?"
"I'm sure they already know."
"I'm taking your bag. You need clothes after you shift back," she said as she put the holder of my bag into her arms as if they were backpacks, before placing her own bag to her front.
"Where is the pouch?" I asked her as I pulled my wallet from my back pocket and opened the zipper of her backpack.
"In my backpack." She replied and helped me place my wallet in there. "Your wolf might not like carrying me."
"Relax, I got you." I smiled at her, but I was discreetly hoping my wolf would not throw a fit.
He surely was very territorial with his body, and like me, he didn't want to be touched or be in proximity to anyone.
My wolf was domineering and had always instilled fear in anyone fortunate enough to see him. But despite that, I knew my wolf would always protect me. I just hope I can also let him protect Adessa. Wolves usually follow their human's wishes, but with an Alpha wolf like mine, making him follow my orders was like trying to order myself. My wolf was more stubborn than I was.Content (C) Nôv/elDra/ma.Org.
But I had no choice. He was our only way out here.
ADESSA.
I had never been on his wolf's back. Or any wolf, for that matter.
Kael was very personal with his wolf and had not let anyone touch or pet him, but I guess he had no choice tonight. It was either his wolf, or we had to walk.
He didn't waste time and shifted before me. In no time, I was already staring at his wolf's black eyes.
My chest began to heave as panic arose within me. He wasn't moving, and I was not sure I was welcome to order him to lower himself on the ground.
"Hi..." I mumbled before forcing a small smile to curl on my lips.
"Grrr..." His wolf bared his teeth, and it made me step back. I thought he would walk forward, but instead, he lowered himself to the ground and began whimpering, letting out a soft purr.
"Okay..." I said, still smiling, but my chest was going up and down at a fast pace. "I will hop on your back. Please, don't drop me. Okay?"
When he showed no reaction and just continued to stare at me, I took a step closer. I bent forward and patted the space between his ears. He tilted his head up and swiped his long tongue over my extended hand, making me giggle.
This was a good sign.
"Thank you," mumbled before clutching the bags in front of me and walking to his side. I carefully climbed onto his back and lowered my upper body so my chest was lying on my backpack before clutching the fur of his neck.
Kael's duffel bag on my back was not comfortable to have, and I wondered if it would be a problem once hiswolf started running. But had no time to contemplate it, as the moment my grip on his fur

tightened, his wolf immediately
stood up and sprang forward.
No warning, no slowly picking up his face he just ran. Fast.
A shriek passed my throat until I was able to get hold of myself. "Oh, Goddess! Oh, Goddess! I kept mumbling over and over again as I tried to balance my body. The weight of the duffel bag was messing with my balance. I should have listened to Kael and left it instead.
"Stop!" I screamed.
I wanted to drop the bag on my back as the force of the wind was knocking me off, and in return, I was surely hurting his wolf with how hard I was grabbing his neck. "Stop!" I screamed again, but before I could let out another one, the sound of an approaching car rang in the air. And by the sound of it, they were already nearing us. "No! Don't stop!" I screamed, but I knew he must have heard the vehicle as well, as he began running faster, and everything we passed by just became a blur of sight. My grip on his neck tightened as I closed my eyes, praying to all the gods and goddesses to save us. I was not even done with my prayer when a gun was fired in our direction.
