Chapter 53
Chapter 53:.
Dolores frowned-why was he clinging to her as he answered Helen’s call? Did he want her to witness their intimate conversation? She grew strangely melancholy. She struggled hard, but the more she struggled, the more Matthew clung to her and said softly, “Don’t move.”
Dolores squirmed again, and Matthew pressed his lips to her ear and said in a warning tone, “Behave yourself while I answer a call, okay?”
Dolores calmed down and didn’t dare move. Matthew smiled and was pleased with Dolores’ obedience. His thumb carefully brushed her clothes and pinched her waist.
The call was answered and a man said anxiously into the phone, “Mr. Nelson, Miss White had an accident and is now in the hospital for emergency treatment.”
What? Helen had an accident?
Because she was close to him, Dolores also heard what the man said. She turned to look at Matthew and he too was looking at her in surprise, “When did this happen?”
Matthew let go of Dolores, stood up and grabbed his jacket. He walked a few steps and remembered that Dolores was there. He turned to her and said, “I have to go.”
Dolores looked at him, “Go ahead.”
She was his girlfriend and someone he liked. He was in danger and he had to go with her.
He pursed his lips and looked like he wanted to say something, but said nothing. He put on his jacket and continued the call as he walked out.
“Ask for a plane ticket to Country A, next flight.”
Dolores watched his back disappearing out the door and scoffed bitterly. This was her original arrangement, she was herself, and “they” were “they”.
She was the odd one out. They were clearly a loving couple and she was standing between them.
“Why did Young Master Nelson leave in such a hurry?” asked Coral as she entered.
It was odd that he came back early and why didn’t he spend some time nurturing their relationship? Was he always so busy? Coral didn’t understand it at all and was very upset. Didn’t he have enough money? Wasn’t he worried about the importance of their marriage?
Dolores pursed her lips and smiled, “Miss White had an accident and he’s going to go take a look.”
Coral’s expression darkened. They had just had a few days of peace, what had that woman done?
“She should get the doctor since she had an accident. Young Master Nelson is not a doctor, can he treat her?” Coral did not hide her displeasure with what had happened.
Dolores reached over to remove a blade from Coral’s shoulder and looked calmly at the workers trimming the nearby hedges, “Coral, haven’t you noticed I’m the odd one out? They are truly in love.”
What, Young Master Nelson was in love with her?
Coral was slightly annoyed with Dolores for not fighting for what was hers. Why was Dolores saying her husband was in love with another woman? Was something wrong with Dolores?
“You were the one selected by Mrs. Nelson to be Young Master’s wife. You are the one chosen by his parents. Who is Helen?” Coral looked sternly at Dolores, “You allowed her to leave when she wanted to? Why can’t you stand up for yourself?”
Dolores laughed bitterly inwardly, but held out her hand to the lovely old woman. Dolores knew she meant it for her and that she wanted things to be all right for her and Matthew. But Dolores wasn’t sure what was going on between Matthew and her.
“Coral, you’re so good to me, what if I can’t bear to leave?”
Coral was startled and looked at Dolores, “You’ll go?”
According to tradition, when a woman married a man, she became part of the family regardless of what happened. Since she was married to Matthew, she belonged to the Nelson family. Where did she intend to go?
In Coral’s eyes, Mrs. Nelson had chosen this daughter-in-law and was Matthew’s legal wife. She would not accept any of Matthew’s other wives.
In about ten days, she would be married to Matthew for a month. Then she would leave when that time came.
Dolores clung to Coral, “I want to go for a walk.”
“Okay, I’ll walk with you.” Coral was very familiar with the surroundings and they could have a good talk during the walk.
Dolores returned to her room immediately after dinner. She tossed and turned in bed and only fell asleep when she became very tired.
Country A.
A colleague, Bryan Eastwood, who came with Helen to Country A, was waiting for Matthew outside the airport. He rushed over to Matthew as soon as he saw him.
“Mr. Nelson.”
“How is he now?” asked Matthew as they walked.
“His condition has stabilized and he’s out of danger. He’s in the patient ward now but…” Bryan paused as he said and didn’t know how to continue.
Matthew said coldly, “Get out of here.”
Bryan looked at Matthew and then lowered his eyes, “Miss White had a miscarriage…”
Matthew stopped walking and his eyes narrowed, “What did you say?”
His large presence was overwhelming, making one’s breath feel stifled.
Bryan swallowed saliva, “Miss…. Miss White had a miscarriage due to the accident. The doctor said she was almost three months pregnant.”
It was as if Matthew had been struck by lightning. He clenched his fists in fury, but he didn’t know why he was furious. He was walking too fast and Bryan had to break into a jog just to keep up with him.
When they were in the car, Bryan drove in silence. He didn’t even dare to breathe audibly for fear of angering the man sitting in the back. They quickly arrived at the hospital.
Bryan stopped the car and ran around the car to open the door, but it was opened by Matthew. He quickly stepped aside. As Matthew got out of the car, he looked at his wristwatch to see the time. It was daytime there while it was nighttime at home.
He reached down, looked at Bryan and said, “Lead the way.”
Bryan led Matthew to Helen’s room, “Miss White is inside.”
Matthew paused in front of the door for a couple of seconds and then pushed the door open to enter.
The room had a faint smell of disinfectant and Helen looked faint as she lay on the bed. When she saw Matthew, she tried to sit up, “Matthew, why…why are you here?”
Matthew rushed over to hold her, “Don’t move as you are hurt.”
Helen leaned into his embrace, “How do you know I’m hurt?”
Bryan was scratching his head at the door and Helen understood and pointed to Bryan, “Did you tell Matthew?”
“When the doctor said your life was in danger, I took the initiative to inform Mr. Nelson…”
“Mind your own business!” Helen threw the pillow at him angrily.
“Bryan, leave us.” Matthew hugged the agitated Helen and stroked her back, “Why did you keep this from me?” Matthew was very conflicted.
Helen lowered her head and tears began to well up, “How could I tell? I was already two months pregnant when I found out and you were already married to Miss Flores at the time. I thought about giving you a surprise after you ended your relationship with Miss Flores but then…”
Helen wept bitterly as she said and hugged Matthew tightly, “Matthew, we have lost our son.”
She cried bitterly, “Matthew, I’m so sorry I didn’t protect our son…” Matthew frowned and felt terribly conflicted.
He was thrilled to have had a son. Every man longed to be a father. This woman had his child and yet he sent her here. If he had not sent her here, she would not have had that accident and her son would not have been lost.
He closed his eyes and said, “This is not your fault.”
It was her mistake. He had also lost his mind for wanting to pursue a relationship with Dolores…..
