Chapter 442 Close Protection
Michael was floored by Abigail's accusations.
He felt dizzy and disoriented, his heart pounding, and his ears ringing so loudly he couldn't hear anything else.
Michael started to believe what Abigail was saying, thinking he was the one who had ruined Emily's life, leading to the tragedy that befell her and the baby.
"I should never have been in her life from the start," Michael muttered.
Just as Abigail was about to continue her rant, the light in the operating room went
out.
Daniel came out, seeing Abigail gripping Michael's collar. He quickly stepped forward and pulled Abigail away from Michael, urgently shouting, "Abigail, what are you doing? This isn't the time for fighting."
Even after being pulled away, Abigail was still agitated, her eyes blazing with anger. Her voice trembled but was resolute as she said, "He's the reason Emily is in this state. How can I let him off? Michael, if anything happens to Emily, I swear I'll make you pay, even if it costs me my life!"
"Enough!" Daniel interjected, pulling Abigail aside.
"Abigail, I get that you're upset, but acting like this won't help Emily."
Hearing the word "help," Abigail immediately snapped back to reality.
Seeing the operating room light off, she turned to Daniel and asked, "How is Emily? Is she okay?"
Michael also looked over, his face full of concern.
Daniel nodded. He had insisted on being part of the surgery today. Although he wasn't the lead surgeon, he was willing to assist the renowned obstetrician just to be close to Emily.
"Don't worry, she's out of danger now. But she needs to be monitored in the ICU for a while. I'll be there to keep an eye on her."
As he finished speaking, Daniel glanced at Michael. He then lowered his gaze and said to Abigail, "Abigail, Michael was the one who carried Emily out of the fire."
Abigail, now completely irrational, scoffed at this. "This is his specialty-the stick and carrot approach.
"Every time, he pushes Emily to the brink, hurts her beyond repair, and then regrets it... It's disgusting and ridiculous!"
Andrew, who had been listening nearby, couldn't stand Abigail's slander and stepped forward to retort.
"What are you talking about? When we arrived, the fire was already raging. We don't know how Mrs. Smith got hurt. Mrs. Smith was carrying Mr. Smith's child. How could Mr. Smith..."
"Quit it with the 'Mrs. Smith' this and 'Mrs. Smith' that!" Abigail snapped, her anger flaring again.
Even if it wasn't Michael's fault, so what?
"How could Emily, alone at home, set the house on fire? She's not a child. She's meticulous. Since marrying Michael, she's done countless household chores. How could she let the kitchen catch fire?" Abigail couldn't resist blaming Michael again.
This plunged Michael into deep guilt and regret.
Was Emily's accident really indirectly caused by him?
No!
"Abigail is right. Emily wouldn't have set the fire on purpose. When I rushed in to save her, I smelled a strong, cheap perfume that even the fire couldn't mask.""Emily never used that kind of perfume, and neither did you, so..." Michael said, locking eyes with Abigail.
Both fell silent, frowning deeply, until Daniel, quick-witted, suggested, "So you think someone snuck into the house while Emily wasn't paying attention?"
It had to be!

Everyone's hearts sank, and Abigail realized, "Since Emily moved in with me after getting pregnant, I haven't used perfume. Emily rarely uses it either. Who could have snuck into our house?
"They resorted to such ruthless actions, even setting fire to the house. It's clear they're determined to eliminate Emily once and for all!"
Listening to Abigail's analysis, it seemed the truth was about to surface. Michael fell into deep thought.
There weren't many people who had a grudge against Emily and wanted her dead. And he knew one of them.
In the following days, Michael stayed at the hospital, never leaving Emily's side.
He had sustained minor injuries while rescuing Emily, but after a simple bandage, he insisted on staying outside the ICU, despite Daniel's attempts to persuade him otherwise.
He visited Emily at regular intervals, donning sterilized clothing each time.noveldrama
Abigail wanted to stay with Emily too, but her new job wouldn't allow it.
She considered quitting, but knowing Emily would scold her for it, she reluctantly went to work, suppressing her worry and fear.
Archibald was unaware of all this. He was busy helping Dean renovate his studio.
After several days without contact, Archibald tried calling her several times, but her phone was with Michael.
When Michael saw Archibald's name on the screen, his expression darkened. Each time Archibald called, Michael hung up and silently noted the number. "Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently busy. Please try again later." Archibald grew increasingly curious. Why wasn't Emily answering his calls? Had he done something wrong during their last meeting?
But no matter how much he thought about it, Archibald couldn't find anything amiss.
Worried, Archibald called Penelope to ask about Emily.
Penelope, a workaholic, often neglected everything else, including her family. But Archibald managed to get an important piece of information from her.
Emily had taken leave, and Abigail had requested it for her.
Prompted by this, Archibald decided to drive to Abigail's house.
Although it was a bit presumptuous given their current relationship, Archibald, unable
to reach Emily for days, couldn't care less.
Dean was entertaining guests.
It was the opening day of his studio.
Sophia was there too, but to avoid Archibald, she dressed inconspicuously, wearing a black baseball cap and blending into the crowd. Archibald didn't notice her. Seeing Archibald about to leave, Sophia, clinging to Dean, couldn't help but comment. "Archibald has something to do? Today's your big day. What could be so important?"
What do you think?
